Research

Our research interests lie at the interface of solid mechanics, applied mathematics, and materials science. We use mathematical tools to understand, predict, and design physical properties, in particular mechanics, of advanced materials and structures. We devote our passion and personality into developing theories that are simple, deep and universal. Ultimately, under the guidance of theory, we aim to put these materials and structures on the table by developing our own experimental facilities and collaborating with experimentalists. Particular examples include:

  • Using helical groups, geometrical compatibility, and analysis to study martensitic phase transformations in nanotubes;
  • Using isometry groups to design origami structures;
  • Using geometrical compatibility and continuum mechanics to study deployable origami and kirigami;
  • Using differential geometry, calculus of variations, and solid mechanics to study the geometrical evolution of liquid crystal elastomer sheets.
